I am not a lover of short stories . . .I prefer a longer narrative with plenty of time for character development and evocation of environment, something Rankin does in truly Dickensian fashion in his Rebus novels. So this literary grab-bag was a mixed blessing, on the plus side.     3. I have always been a fan of Ian Rankin. Yes, we can never get enough of Rebus, but Rankin's writing has incredible depth. Any one of his short stories could develop into another Rebus like character. And perhaps they will This is a great collection of short stories that has enabled Mr. Rankin to show us the depth and breadth of his visions. Indulge yourself with his storytelling and hope that a new star may be born.
